***Veterans ID Cards:***

Around this time of year, many veterans ask about where they can obtain a “Veterans ID Card” for use in showing their veteran’s status when applying for discounts at local restaurants and retailers on Veterans Day. Most retailers will accept the veteran’s patient ID card available for veterans enrolled in the VA healthcare system. At the veteran’s request and after showing a DD Form 214, The Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles will signify veteran’s status on the back of the veteran’s driver’s license.  Also, veterans having an e-benefits account may go into the documents section under “access my documents – download VA letters –veteran’s proof of service” and print their own veteran’s ID card.  The retailer, however, has full authority of deciding what type of veterans’ ID is valid for their establishment.

***Community Book Read***

The Things They Carried tells the story of Alpha Company before, during and after the Vietnam War. Author Tim O’Brien was drafted in 1968. He opposed the war and considered going to Canada. He served a tour from 1969-1970, was wounded twice, rising to sergeant.

Copies available at Bartholomew County Public Library, University Library, and Mill Race Center.

Beginning on Monday, July 28th, our office will be open from 8 am - noon and from 1 pm - 5 pm on Monday to Friday. The office will be closed from Noon until 1 pm each day for employee lunch time.

***New for Veterans***

Beginning in March 2014, most Veterans will no longer be required to complete the annual financial assessment known as a Means Test.  Instead, VA will receive income information from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and Social Security Administration (SSA), and will contact the Veterans only if the information received indicates a change in their VA health benefits may be appropriate.  However, Veterans who are eligible for enrollment only because their income is below an established threshold will be required to complete a means test when applying for VA health care enrollment.

If at any time the Veteran’s financial status changes, the Veteran may submit an updated financial assessment. VA encourages Veterans to continue to report changes in their income information as well as their personal information, such as address, phone numbers, dependents, next of kin, and health insurance.
