An Intake Officer from Bartholomew County Youth Services Center has earned state recognition for her work with area youth. Cathy Vawter, who has been employed in some capacity at the Bartholomew County Youth Services Center since 1997 was named the 2014 Indiana Detention Care Worker of the Year. Recipients of the award must be full time employees working with youth in some capacity and nominated by their supervisor. The Indiana Juvenile Detention Center Association’s executive board choses the final winner. Vawter is a supervisor at the Center and is the Center’s Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) coordinator. She also teaches a class to the parents of high-risk youth.
Brad Barnes, Director of Court Services states, “Cathy is a very strong member of the team at Bartholomew County Youth Services Center and is dedicated to the children that use our facility. Cathy helps each child strive to attain their greatest potential regardless of their situation.”
Anita Biehle, director of the Bartholomew County Youth Services Center said “Cathy’s attitude towards serving at-risk youth and their families is one of diligence, determination and dedication. Cathy seems to see potential in every youth regardless of their situation and she just seems to never lose hope for any youth. Cathy is articulate in her organization and management skills and she is usually the first supervisor to volunteer for projects”.
